National Sports Day 2022: Why 29 August is India's National Sports Day
Every year on August 29, Rashtriya Khel Divas, also known as National Sports Day, is observed. The Indian hockey guru Major Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary is commemorated on this day. The celebration of National Sports Day aims to honor Major Dhyanchand's legacy while raising awareness of the importance of and advantages of including sports and physical activity in daily life.
Significance of National Sports Day
The purpose of National Sports Day is to raise public awareness of the value of sports and the advantages of physical activity. Around the nation, a number of events are organized with the goal of encouraging people to participate in sports.
Outstanding sportsmen in the nation are acknowledged on this day with honors like the Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, and Dronacharya Award. At a special ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the President of India presents the awards.
History of National Sports Day
Major Dhyan Chand
On August 29, 1905, Chand was born in Allahabad to a Rajput family. He was the older brother of Roop Singh, another hockey player, and the son of Sameshwar Singh and Sharadha Singh. The father of Dhyan Chand was a hockey player who served in the British Indian Army. Mool Singh and Roop Singh were the two brothers that Dhyan Chand had. Chand had to drop out of school after only six years of formal education since the family had to relocate due to his father's frequent army moves. In the end, the family relocated to Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Dhyan Chand received the Gem of India, the 20th National Award, from the Union Minister of India in 2012. Ashok Dhyan Chand, who is also an Olympian in hockey, accepted the honor on behalf of his late father Dhyan Chand. On September 22, 2012, the award was presented by the Journalist Association of India in the Sirifort Auditorium in New Delhi, India, under the auspices of the Journalists Federation of India.
The Dhyan Chand Award, given annually to athletes since 2002 who not only contribute to the sport through their performances but also after they retire, is India's highest honor for lifetime achievement in sports. In 2002, the Delhi stadium's name was changed to Dhyan Chand National Stadium in his honor.
